Entry #4

My Favorite Day Trip Spot

This blog is for anyone who lives in the Phoenix area and is looking for a great place to visit for the day.  When it is 115 degrees outside, and you are looking for a place to go and get away from the sweltering heat you should consider heading north to the Mogollon Rim area.  Depending on where you live it’s should only take about 2 hours by car.

Once you get to that area you’ve got several great options to spend the day or camp.  You can drive to the top of the rim and visit Woods Canyon Lake where you can rent a small fishing boat for the day.  And if you don’t have any fishing gear don’t worry, you can rent that too.  The lake is stocked regularly with rainbow trout.

If boating isn’t your thing, consider checking out one of the hiking trails at Christopher Creek or Horton Creek.  These are both great locations to go early n the fall to see the foliage change to the most vibrant pink, yellows, and browns as the leaves start to fall from the trees.  A little later in the season you can find ripe blackberries to eat and little mint plants growing all along the creeks.

After your hike you can take a tour of the Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery just down the road from Horton Creek.  Make sure to pack some lunch for your trip so you can eat at one of the picnic tables next to the pond while listening to the serene babbling creek.

This summer when you open your car door and it feels the same as when you open your oven consider getting away for a day to one of these refreshing locations.  You won’t regret it.
